Weed Mat Cost and Value: How to Spend Less per Square Metre

Searching for the weed mat price before you buy? The number on the roll is only part of the story. What you really pay depends on how long the mat lasts, how much of it you waste, and how many pins it takes to hold it down. This guide explains what decides weed mat cost and value in India, and how to choose a width and roll length that gives you more value per square metre.

Quick answer: Weed mat value depends on five things: fabric weight (GSM), UV stabilisation, the width you choose, the roll length you buy and the pins you need to hold it down. A 110 GSM UV-stabilised woven mat that lasts several seasons, in a width that matches your beds and a length that fits your area, gives you the lowest cost over time.

Who this guide is for: home and terrace gardeners, vegetable and strawberry growers, orchard owners, nurseries and polyhouse operators comparing weed mat options before they buy.

Key facts at a glance:

  • Weed mat: 110 GSM black woven polypropylene with carbon black and UV stabilisers, rated for 3 to 5 years outdoors
  • Widths: 0.6 m (2 ft), 1 m (3.3 ft) and 1.5 m (5 ft)
  • Roll lengths: 5 m, 10 m, 20 m, 50 m and 100 m in every width
  • Water and air pass through; green guide lines for straight rows
  • Pins: about 200 per 100 m roll when both edges are pinned every 1 m

What decides weed mat price and value

  • Fabric weight (GSM): heavier fabric resists tearing and lasts longer. 110 GSM is a strong all-round weight for gardens, farms, orchards and polyhouse floors.
  • UV stabilisation: mat without UV protection can break down in one Indian summer. Ours carries carbon black and UV stabilisers for a 3 to 5 year outdoor life.
  • Woven or non-woven: woven polypropylene lets water and air through and stands up better to foot traffic.
  • Width: a width that matches your bed or row means less cutting and less waste.
  • Roll length: rolls come in 5 m, 10 m, 20 m, 50 m and 100 m. Longer rolls cost less per metre and need fewer joins, while short rolls avoid paying for fabric you will not use.
  • Pins: every mat must be pinned, so nails or U-pins are part of the real cost.

Choose the width that cuts waste

All three widths are the same 110 GSM fabric. Pick the one that covers your bed or row in one piece.

WidthCoverage per 100 mBest for
0.6 m (2 ft)60 sq mSingle crop rows, drip lines, nursery paths
1 m (3.3 ft)100 sq mGarden beds, raised beds, nurseries, polyhouse aisles
1.5 m (5 ft)150 sq mOrchard rows, wide beds, polyhouse floors, landscaping

For wide areas, a wider roll needs fewer strips, fewer joins and fewer pins, so it is faster to lay. See which weed mat roll width to buy for a full comparison.

Choose the roll length that fits your area

  • 5 m or 10 m: one kitchen garden bed, a terrace bed, pots or a short path.
  • 20 m: several vegetable rows or a garden path.
  • 50 m: small farm plots and nursery rows.
  • 100 m: farm rows, orchards and polyhouses, with the fewest joins.

Measure your total row or bed length first, then add about 10 to 15 cm for each overlap at joins.

Don’t forget the pins

Weed mat must be pinned or the wind lifts it. Pin the edges every 1 to 1.5 m and add pins along every join and overlap. For a 100 m roll pinned on both edges every 1 m, plan on about 200 pins. Pinning every 1.5 m cuts that to about 134 per roll on sheltered sites; on windy or sandy sites, keep to 1 m.

Quantity examples

Home kitchen garden: 4 beds of 1 m × 8 m

That is 32 m of bed. One 50 m roll of 1 m wide mat covers all four beds and leaves enough for a path, and one pack of 100 nails pins every edge at 1 m spacing.

Orchard: 10 tree rows, 50 m long, 1.5 m strip under the trees

Total row length is 500 m, so you need 5 rolls of 1.5 m × 100 m and about 1,000 nails or U-pins at 1 m spacing. Rows stay free of hand weeding for several seasons.

Full ground cover for 1 acre

One acre is about 4,047 sq m, so full cover takes about 27 rolls of 1.5 m × 100 m before pins. Most farms only cover crop rows or polyhouse floors, which needs far less. For acre-scale orders, ask us for a bulk quote.

Why a longer-lasting mat is better value

A mat that lasts one season has to be bought and laid again every crop. A UV-stabilised 110 GSM mat rated for 3 to 5 years spreads its cost over many seasons, can be lifted and relaid, and saves the labour of repeated laying and hand weeding. Compared with plastic mulch film, it costs more on day one but often less over several seasons. See weed mat vs plastic mulching sheet.

Five ways to get more value from weed mat

  1. Match the width to your bed or row so you cut less and waste less.
  2. Buy the roll length that fits your total length, and choose longer rolls for farm rows.
  3. Lay drip lines first so you never need to lift the mat; see drip irrigation with weed mat.
  4. Overlap joins by 10 to 15 cm and pin them well so wind cannot tear the mat.
  5. For large projects, request a bulk quote for mat and pins together.

Frequently asked questions

What decides the price of weed mat?

Fabric weight (GSM), UV stabilisation, woven or non-woven fabric, width and roll length. Pins to hold the mat down are also part of the real cost.

Is a longer weed mat roll better value?

Yes for large areas. Longer rolls cost less per metre and need fewer joins. For a single garden bed, a 5 m or 10 m roll avoids paying for fabric you will not use.

How many weed mat nails do I need per roll?

About 200 for a 100 m roll pinned on both edges every 1 m, plus extra along joins and overlaps. Pinning every 1.5 m on sheltered sites cuts this to about 134.

Is 110 GSM weed mat good?

Yes. 110 GSM woven polypropylene is a strong all-round weight for gardens, farms, orchards and polyhouse floors, and with UV stabilisers it lasts 3 to 5 years outdoors.

Where can I see the current weed mat price?

Current prices for the 0.6 m, 1 m and 1.5 m widths in every roll length are shown on each product page. For large orders, ask for a bulk quote.
