The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right Weed Mat for Your Farm
Every farmer and greenhouse grower knows the struggle with weeds. They compete with crops for water, sunlight and nutrients, hand weeding is slow and costly, and herbicides can harm soil health. A good weed mat solves most of this, but only if you choose the right one. This guide explains what to look for in a weed mat for farm use: material, weight, UV protection, permeability, width and pins, with a simple checklist at the end.
What is a weed mat?
A weed mat, also called landscape fabric, ground cover or weed barrier, is a woven material laid over the soil. Its job is to block sunlight so weed seeds cannot sprout. Unlike a solid plastic sheet, a good agricultural weed mat is permeable: water, air and liquid fertiliser pass through to the roots of your crops.
Weed mat vs plastic mulching sheet
| Woven weed mat | Plastic mulching film | |
|---|---|---|
| Water and air | Pass through | Blocked; water runs off |
| Strength | Resists tearing and foot traffic | Thin, tears easily |
| Life | Several seasons when UV-stabilised | Usually one season |
| Reuse | Can be lifted and relaid | Usually discarded |
| Upfront cost | Higher | Lower |
For permanent beds, orchards, polyhouse floors and paths, woven mat is usually better value over its life.
Key factors when choosing

1. Material
Choose woven polypropylene (PP). It is strong, permeable and resists tearing under foot traffic and tools.
2. Weight (GSM)
GSM is grams per square metre. Very light mats tear and let light through. Heavier mats suit long-term farm and polyhouse use. Our mat is 110 GSM, a strong all-round weight for farms, orchards, polyhouses and kitchen gardens.
3. UV stabilisation
Indian sun breaks down untreated plastic quickly. Look for carbon black and UV stabilisers. Ours is rated for a 3 to 5 year outdoor life.
4. Water permeability
If a mat does not drain, water pools on top and roots suffer. A woven mat lets rain and drip water through.
5. Guide lines
Coloured lines woven into the fabric help you lay straight rows and space planting holes evenly. Ours has green guide lines.
6. Width and roll length
Every width comes in 5 m, 10 m, 20 m, 50 m and 100 m rolls. A short roll suits a home garden bed, while a full 100 m roll means fewer joins on farm rows. Choose the width that covers your bed or row in one piece:
| Roll | Coverage | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 0.6 m × 100 m | 60 sq m | Single rows, drip lines, paths |
| 1 m × 100 m | 100 sq m | Raised beds, polyhouse aisles, kitchen gardens |
| 1.5 m × 100 m | 150 sq m | Orchard rows, wide beds, polyhouse floors |

Do not forget the pins
Choosing the mat is half the job; holding it down is the other half. A loose mat lifts in the wind, tears and lets weeds back in.
- 6 inch weed mat nails: wide flat cap and barbed shank for firm soil.
- 7 inch weed mat nails: an extra inch of grip for sandy, loose or windy sites.
- Galvanized U-pins: two legs for extra hold at joins and over 16 mm drip pipe.
Pin edges every 1 to 1.5 m and joins every 30 to 50 cm. Compare them in our nails vs U-pins guide.
Which mat for which farm?
| Use | Roll | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Vegetable and strawberry beds | 1 m | Bed setup with drip |
| Fruit orchards | 1.5 m | Weed mat for orchard rows |
| Polyhouse and net house | 1.5 m | Polyhouse floor setup |
| Paths and nursery walkways | 0.6 m | How to lay weed mat |

Frequently asked questions
Which weed mat is best for farms?
A woven polypropylene mat of around 100 GSM or more, UV stabilised and water permeable. Our 110 GSM mat with guide lines suits farms, orchards and polyhouses.
What GSM weed mat should I buy?
For farm, orchard and polyhouse use, choose around 100 GSM or heavier. Our 110 GSM mat is a strong all-round weight.
Is weed mat better than plastic mulch?
For long-term use, usually yes. Woven weed mat lets water through, resists tearing and lasts several seasons, while plastic film usually lasts one.
Does weed mat let water through?
Yes. Woven weed mat is water and air permeable, so rain and drip water reach the roots.
How long does weed mat last?
Our UV-stabilised 110 GSM mat is rated for 3 to 5 years outdoors.
What do I use to hold weed mat down?
6 inch nails for firm soil, 7 inch nails for sandy or windy sites, and galvanized U-pins for joins and over drip pipe.
